Things to Do –
Apalachicola/Port St. Joe

When traveling between Port St. Joe and Apalachicola, remember to adjust your clocks, time really does slow down. Port St. Joe, located in Gulf County, is in the Central Time zone. As you come northwest into Franklin County and Apalachicola, you enter into the Eastern Time zone. No matter where, or when you are, you’ll find plenty to do while visiting the Forgotten Coast.

Attractions

With a rich history dating back hundreds of years, the community has increased efforts toward downtown revitalization, bringing back the glory and grace of the local architecture. Take a step back in time to a quieter and more peaceful era.

  • Apalachicola Historic District – a scenic walking tour of historic homes and other buildings dating back to the 1830s
  • Trinity Episcopal Church – established in 1837 the church, the sixth oldest in the state, is a prime example of Greek Revival Architecture. Services have been held in the church for more than 165 years.

  • Coombs House Inn – a Victorian mansion built in 1905 is now a Bed and Breakfast inn.

  • Gibson Inn – built in the early 1900s, the three-story inn has come full circle, first as a hotel for early turn-of-the-century travelers and now, restored to its original beauty, a landmark Bed and Breakfast inn.

  • Chestnut Street Cemetery – established in 1831, epitaphs tell the history of the town. Gravestone art reflects the historic, religious, and burial customs of the time

  • Crooked River Lighthouse – built more than 100 years ago, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

  • Carrabelle Police Department – originally housed in a glass telephone booth in the early 1960s at the corner of Highway 98 and Tallahassee Street, the Carrabelle Police Department was the nation’s smallest station. Today it is on display near the Chamber of Commerce building.

Parks

Miles and miles of undeveloped beach welcome visitors to Apalachicola Bay and Port St. Joe. Hundreds of acres of national and state parks offer access to nature as it was meant to be.

  • Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve – exhibits on local plants and animals, and an aviary and live giant fish tank also on display

  • Apalachicola National Forest – certified as Florida National Scenic Trail, offers nearly 70 miles of unpaved, orange blaze trail, hiking

  • Tate’s Hell State Forest – 35 miles of rivers and streams for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Hiking and primitive camping also allowed.

  • Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park – accessible by a 4-mile bridge, park offers excellent shelling and access to hiking trails, pristine beaches, fishing and camping. Park also has picnic shelters, grills and public restrooms.

  • Cape St. George State Preserve – 9-mile long barrier island separating Apalachicola Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Also home to the Cape St. George Lighthouse, built in 1852.

Festivals

Apalachicola exports nearly 10 percent of the oysters in the U.S., and produces 90 percent of Florida’s supply. Chances are if you eat an oyster in Florida, it was harvested in Apalachicola. That fact alone is ample reason for the region to celebrate.
